Apply for a online passport
Applying for a passport online can be done through the Passport Seva website. Online passport applications are processed by the Ministry of External Affairs. Therefore, you must apply through the website if you want to obtain a new passport or renew your current passport.
The following steps explain how you can apply online for a passport.
Online passport applications require a few steps. Here is a breakdown of each step:
Sign in to www.passportindia.gov.in
Step 1: To apply, go to Passport Seva’s official website & click on the ‘APPLY’ button.
Step 2: If you already have an account, you can log in with your ID and password.
Step 3: Create an account if you are a first-time user. Here are the steps:
Step 4: You must click on ‘Register Now’ to begin.
Step 5: You must enter the login ID and password. Click ‘Register’ and enter the captcha code.
You can choose what type of application you want.
The service you want to use should be selected from the options provided after you log in. Choose from:
- A Fresh passport/ A Reissue Passport
- Diplomatic or official passport
- A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)
- An Identity Certificate
Filling out the form
The application can be filled out online or offline. Here are the steps to fill out the application form offline:
Step 1: Get the application form in a soft copy by clicking the link provided.
Step 2: Links to the following forms will appear on a page. The following forms can be downloaded, depending on the type of application:
- For Fresh/reissue
- For Police Clearance Certificate
- For Diplomatic/Official
- For an Identity Certificate
Step 3: After filling out the application e-form, click on the link for e-form upload.
Step 4: Completing the form and uploading it.
Your application can also be submitted online. It is also possible to partially complete the form and complete it later. Before submitting the form, it is best to check it once.
Step 4: Book the appointment, and pay for it.
Once the form is filled out and submitted, an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or the relevant passport authority is required. Please follow the steps below to book your appointment:
Step 1: Click on ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ on the ‘Applicant Home’ page.
Step 2: Details of the application form will appear. Select the ARN of the application form.
Step 3: Choose ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ from the list provided.
Step 4: Then select the payment option you prefer from the two options provided, viz. Payment by Challan and Online Payment.
Note: Online payment for tatkal appointments has the same rate as a regular passport application. Payment must be made in the PSK on the date of the appointment.
You can book an appointment immediately after paying online. You will need to follow the following steps if you choose to pay by challan:
- To pay in cash, go to an SBI branch and present the challan. You can do this only after 3 hours of generating the challan. That challan will remain valid for 85 days.)
- Afterward, obtain a challan from the receiving bank.
- It takes two days for the bank to verify the ARN information included on the challan.
- Post-verification, the website will display a notification that the payment has been successful, so the applicant can monitor its status. An email will also be sent to the applicant.
You can book your appointment online.
The steps are as follows:
Step 1: Click on ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ and select your preferred PSK.
Step 2: From the list, choose a time that suits you. As a result, the applicant must choose a PSK based on the availability of the date.
Step 3: Submit the CAPTCHA code to confirm your appointment slot.
Step 4: Select the ‘Pay and Book Appointment’ option.
Step 5: You can view details such as ARNs, names, types of applications, payment amounts, contact numbers, and appointment dates.
Step 6: If you have chosen to pay online, the browser will take you to the payment gateway.
Upon successful completion of payment, an appointment number and confirmation of the appointment will be sent to you. An SMS will also be sent to you. Please print out your application receipt. The SMS will now be accepted by all PSKs as appointment proof.
If you paid multiple payments for an appointment, application, or ARN, the excess amount will be refunded by the RPO. The passport appointment can be rescheduled thrice from the date of payment. If you miss an appointment, you can reschedule.
