The challan payment can be made offline at any SBI branch if you do not wish to make the payment online. The challan receipt should be brought to the appointment.

In most states, you will be able to view a list of PSKs and POPSKs available while booking an appointment. Choosing one close to your home is convenient, so you will be able to travel there easily on the day of the appointment. At the nearby Indian Passport office, you can book the slot on any date of your choice. You will receive an email and phone notification when you book the slot.

To verify your educational qualifications, current address, and age, you will be required to bring all original documents on the day of the appointment. You will have your biometrics taken and all documentation will be verified at the Passport office. You can submit a request for any changes needed before the final processing to the counter officers if necessary. Any necessary changes can be handled with their assistance.

Valid proof must be provided after the changes have been applied so that the changes are reflected in the application. You will receive an SMS with details regarding the police verification after the papers are verified.

In case of lack of sufficient documents during verification, you are asked to visit the Passport office again and the officers will allow time for visiting within 3 days.

Alternatively, if you miss the appointment in the first slot, you can reschedule it thrice without paying any extra charges. Even after 3 times, you are unable to visit the Passport office, then you have to reapply by filing a new form and the whole process starts again. In this case, you need to pay the passport fee again to book an appointment at the Passport office.

• Police verification:

In some cases, police verification is not required, when the address of the renewed passport is the same as that of an old passport address. Else, in all the other cases, it’s mandatory to complete Police verification either before the issuance of a passport (in normal cases) or after the issuance of a passport (in tatkal cases).

Passports are issued by the authorities only if there are no objections found in the Police report. Otherwise, the passport is put on hold until the police verification is cleared. Some of us would think that police verification is no longer useful once we get a passport in hand, especially during tatkal schemes.

However, using a passport without completion of police verification is not allowed. Sometimes it is considered a violation of the law, and additional actions are taken against the applicant.

Documents required for Passport Renewal:

• Existing passport original 
• Educational qualifications are proof.
• Address proofs (for the address you want on your upcoming passport)
• Identity proofs on your name
• Proofs for a changing name (in case a name change is required)
• For married applicants, to add a spouse name, a spouse passport copy is required.
• In the case of the spouse name change, other supporting documents are needed.
• NOC for Government employees.

Renewal of Short Validity Passports (SVP):

Short Validity passports are renewed in the same way as the normal passport. You must fill out the application online in addition to booking a slot at the Passport office. The validity of the renewed passport depends upon the decision of the Assistant Passport Officer/RPO.

In general Short Validity Passports are issued in the following cases:

• For students attending entrance exams like TOEFL, SAT, etc, the passport can be processed even under tatkal by submitting the verification certificate to the Passport office.
• Non-delivery of passports to applicants at post offices due to loss in transit.
• Applicants with pending criminal cases in the court
• NRI’s traveling to India for a short stay.
